Social Networks

I exclusively use open source networks on the Fediverse.

I won’t use proprietary spy networks like Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter, so don’t ask. I care about my privacy and freedom, I don’t like being the product of a company, and I wish to retain total control over what I post. Plus, I’m an advocate for Free (as in Speech) Software.

I have a several accounts on the Fediverse, each with a different purpose. If you’re not sure which one to follow, my Mastodon.social account is a good choice — it’s for general discussion of anything and everything. My Nerdica.net account is also a good choice if you’re just interested in my blog.

Friendica:
Friendica is a more fully-fledged social networking platform (think Facebook, minus the games but with other useful functionality Facebook doesn’t have). It can also be used just for microblogging (think Twitter). It can federate with Matodon, GNU Social, Hubzilla, Diaspora, and several others — check here for a list.

I intend to use this account mainly for discussing stuff on my blog, though you’re welcome to talk to me about other stuff.

Mastodon:
Mastodon is for microblogging (think Twitter). It can federate with GNU Social, Friendica, Hubzilla, and a few others — check here for a list.

Movim:
Movim is a microblogging platform (think Twitter), but focused on Jabber (a.k.a. XMPP) users. Unfortunately, it federates only with other Movim instances.

I am currently using this on a trial basis. I will probably not stick with it — it doesn’t federate with anything else and I don’t know anyone personally that uses it, so it’s hard to justify using it unless a significant number of people follow me there.
